Against the Odds is currently in talks with several football clubs about the issue, and hopes that Bolton’s stance will begin a nationwide movement. The campaign calls on all clubs to cut ties with the gambling industry.
Research from the organisation found that gambling logos can appear over 700 times in a single football match, which is the equivalent of over six logos per minute.
In Greater Manchester alone, where Bolton Wanderers is based, it is believed that 14,000 people experience serious gambling problems, with a further 96,000 experiencing moderate harm.
“Gambling addiction can have a devastating effect on individuals and their families and communities, and that’s why Bolton Wanderers Football Club is pledging our formal support to the campaign,” said Bolton Wanderers Chairman Sharon Brittan.
“Last year, we made the decision to close the on-site betting facilities at the University of Bolton Stadium and committed to not enter into any new commercial partnerships or sponsorships with firms representing the gambling industry.”
As noted by Brittan, the club cut all ties with betting companies in September 2021, instead seeking to support charities and organisations that provide help for those suffering from gambling addiction.
Against the Odds Campaigner Michael Viggars commented: “The gambling industry often talks about ‘gambling responsibly’ but with every square inch of sports stadia being sold to advertise dozens of different sports betting brands, it’s no wonder that we’re seeing more and more people suffering from gambling-related harms.
“With Bolton Wanderers leading the way in Greater Manchester and nationally we believe we can start a movement to end gambling sponsorship in sport.”
